Report: Quantic Dream And David Cage Face Allegations Of Toxic Studio Culture

Game informer - Sun, 01/14/2018 - 13:52

Quantic Dream, the studio behind cinematic adventure games like Heavy Rain and the upcoming Detroit: Become Human, is accused of having a toxic work environment that involves sexual misconduct, as well as sexist, racist, and homophobic comments aimed at its staff.

Reports came from three separate French outlets today: Le Monde, Canard PC, and Mediapart, all of which corroborate these claims. According to Le Monde, five former employees filed a complaint in spring 2017 when an employee was circulating degrading images involving other staff members. In February 2017, an IT manager discovered 600 photoshopped images that depicted employees in homophobic, sexist, or offensive ways, including Nazi symbols or crude imagery. These files date back to 2013, with some even being displayed in open spaces around the office.

Studio heads David Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumièr strongly deny the allegations, with Cage reportedly saying that he is "shocked" by them. Although they were both aware of the photoshopped images, they say they didn't know of the more offensive ones.

Le Monde reports that allegations also include sexual misconduct at parties, such as Fondaumièr forcing kisses on women or having generally sleazy behavior. Long work hours and racism were also among the complaints. For example, two sources told the French paper that after watching a surveillance video of a burglary at the company, Cage asked a Tunisian employee if one of the robbers was his cousin. Cage has since responded to these claims, calling them "absurd."

Cage gave a statement in response to the allegations of homophobia and racism, which you can read below:

You want to talk about homophobia? I work with Ellen Page, who fights for LGBT rights. You want to talk about racism? I work with Jesse Williams, who fights for civil rights in the USA... Judge me by my work.

Employee accounts describe Cage as hard to work with and that there is a high turnover rate at the 180-person company.

Last year, Quantic Dream faced controversy for its trailer for Detroit: Become Human, due to its depiction of both domestic and child abuse.

[Source: EuroGamer via Le Monde]

Our Take
These allegations are saddening to hear about, since no work environment should ever be toxic or take aim at its workers. I honestly find Cage's response disappointing and embarrassing. Pointing to his projects and saying he's worked alongside activists for LGBT rights or civil rights is unrelated, and doesn't mean anything when it comes to his supposed actions. I wonder if the allegations would at all impact the release of Detroit: Become Human. Should we hear more, we'll update this article.

Awesome Games Done Quick Comes To A Close, Raising Over $2 Million

Game informer - Sun, 01/14/2018 - 11:16

Awesome Games Done Quick 2018 (AGDQ) has come to a close. The weeklong speedrunning raised a total of $2,263,508 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Donations are still coming in, but so far it's topped last year's donations by around $40,000. These donations come from over 32,000 people, and more than 130 of them donated over $1000. AGDQ had over 150 runs, finishing with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This final run was completed in almost five hours, without using amiibos and only going through the main quests. You can view a list of all the runs from the event by heading here.

In total, the Games Done Quick series has raised over $14.5 million for charity over the years with its many events.

Our Take
It's great to see that AGDQ continues to grow each year, setting new records with its donations. This year was even more successful than the last, and I'm excited to for the series' next event, Summer Games Done Quick 2018, which takes place from June 24 to July 1.

See What The Cameras In Sonic Generations Can't Catch In This Video

Game informer - Sat, 01/13/2018 - 18:31

Like most Sonic Games, Sonic Generations is about speed. While that makes for fast-paced gameplay, it also means it's easy to miss lots of small details as you speed by areas like Green Hill Zone. The camera's limited views also get in the way.

Thankfully, Youtuber Shesez has figured out a way to look closer at the stages most of us blaze right on by. Using some camera wizardry in his Boundary Break, he's able to show us some fun secrets, like whether the powerups inside those little TVs are actually 3D or 2D, what the "classic" 2D levels look like from behind Sonic's back, and what Sonic's mouth looks like inside of his skull.

Gravity Rush 2 Servers Getting Six-Month Extension, Shutting Down In July

Game informer - Sat, 01/13/2018 - 16:41

Originally scheduled to shut down this coming Friday, Gravity Rush 2's servers are now scheduled to stay up for six more months.

Players logging into Gravity Rush 2 received a notice telling them about the change. Rather than shutting down on January 19, the servers will now stay up until July 18, 10pm Pacific Time.

While the servers aren't vital to the game, they do add some nice perks. While the servers are up, players will be able to send or receive new challenges and treasure hunts from others, view leaderboards for various tasks, receive Dusty Tokens (used to buy various pieces of furniture for the photo mode). Sony is still increasing the number of Dusty Tokens players receive from various tasks until the servers shut down.

Our Take
While the extension is great, it's still a bit shocking that Gravity Rush 2's servers will only be up for one-and-a-half years. The online portions aren't vital, but the treasure hunts were a great bit of community building, and I'm sad to see them go in July.

Nintendo Still Not Interested In Pursuing Virtual Reality, 4K

Game informer - Sat, 01/13/2018 - 15:21

Nintendo's always had a habit of doing its own thing, breaking off from what market trends dictate they should do. With their latest success story in the Switch, it looks less likely than ever that they'll end that habit.

Speaking with French publication Les Numériques, head of Nintendo France Philippe Lavoué reiterated the company's stance against both technologies. Lavoué stated that he doubts VR is viable in a mainstream way, and that consumers aren't going to want something that isn't a total package. The same goes for 4K, which the company does not see as widely adopted as it should be for them to invest in it.

This is in keeping with their trend of not doing something simply because their competitors are, or because that seems to be where the market is going. "If we do the same thing as everyone else, we're sure to die, since we are smaller than they are," Lavoué said. "With the Switch, we have the benefit of allowing for different uses adapted to the lives of our users."

Good news for fans of Nintendo's unique position in the industry, but potentially bad news for anyone who'd like to see Mario in VR or at 4K.

[Source: Les Numériques]

Our Take
Can't say I'm bummed about the lack of VR Nintendo games in the near future. 4K is a different story, however; while Switch titles aren't exactly powerhouses, they look great, but it's likely that in a few years, when more players have made the jump to 4K, that Switch titles will look dated. But that's all the more reason to simply make a new console at that point, I guess?

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Coming In June, Will Have 20 DLC Characters

Game informer - Sat, 01/13/2018 - 14:15

Arc System Works' second tag-team fighting game releasing this year (the first being Dragon Ball FighterZ), BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, will release later this year. After that, players will have access to a total of 20 characters across several DLC packs.

After the conclusion of its yearly "Fighting Game Awards," Arc made several announcements regarding Cross Tag Battle. The game will launch in the West on June 5 (about a week behind the Japanese May 31 launch). Second, the game's first DLC character, Blake Belladonna from RWBY, was announced with a new trailer (which you can watch here).

Third, Blake is one of 20 DLC characters, which will be split across eight DLC character packs. Six of these packs will include three characters apiece, and two will only feature one character, with Blake being one of them (There will also be one all-inclusive DLC pack). This, along with the game's currently-announced 20 characters, makes for a total of 40 playable characters.

Finally, a limited edition of the game was announced, which includes a poster, the all-inclusive character DLC pack, an art book, and one platform-exclusive bonus for both PS4 and Switch: An acrylic stand for PS4, and a storage pouch for Switch.

[Source: Arc System Works, (2), (3), (4) via Gematsu]

Our Take
Twenty characters at launch for a crossover game made up mostly of characters from previous games sounds a little low. Hopefully the character DLC won't be too expensive and will let players expand the cast without emptying their wallets.

NBA Jam Announcer Working To Revitalize Series For 25th Anniversary

Game informer - Sat, 01/13/2018 - 13:02

You might have heard this before, but there are plans to bring back NBA Jam back. This being the series' 25th anniversary, a special "NBA Jam Day," during which the LA Clippers will host the Sacramento Kings with NBA Jam announcer Tim Kitzrow calling plays, should bring back some nice nostalgia for local fans today. But there are bigger plans underway.

Speaking to ESPN, Kitzrow said he is currently working with Microsoft to bring the series back in some way. "I can't speak anything to the specifics, but I can tell you there is movement in the works to get it done for the 25th year," Kitzrow said. "So I'm hoping that we get a remake that does justice to the original." Kitzrow would have to also work with EA, who currently owns the rights to the series and attempted to bring the series back itself back in 2010.

Kitzrow may also be working with Michael Jordan. According to NBA Jam's original creative lead Mark Turmell, special copies of the original arcade game were made for Jordan, Gary Payton, and Ken Griffey Jr. (who sports/SNES game fans will quickly realize is not an NBA player but rather an ex-MLB player for the Seattle Mariners) which had them in it. Speaking with Shacknews, Kitrow stated he is working on a way to get that version of the game officially released. "It's like the Holy Grail, the Michael Jordan one-off-only NBA Jam game," Kitzrow said. "We just have some legal hurdles to go through, but we're hoping for the 25th anniversary to get that done."

For a recent interview with Kitzrow covering the history of the series as well as the voice actor's other works, check out this interview we did with him for The Game Informer Show.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

Our Take
I played a lot of NBA Jam on the Sega Game Gear, of all things, and enjoyed the heck out of NBA Jam: On Fire Edition when it came out in 2011. If this new revival leads to something as good as that, I'm all for it.

After Years Of Domination, Super Smash Bros. For Wii U's Best Player Is Retiring

Game informer - Sat, 01/13/2018 - 12:14

Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios, who most will agree is the world's best Super Smash Bros. For Wii U player, is finally calling it quits.

Barrios posted the official announcement on his Twitter following the release of the latest Panda Global Rankings, which use tournament statistics to rank the best players. Four rankings have been released in the last two years, and Barrios has placed first in all of them. He has won dozens of tournaments, having an world record for most consecutive tournament wins in the game, at 53 wins in a row. Barrios is currently sponsored by Team Solomid, and tournament winnings comprise a large part of his income.

Despite this success, Barrios had fallen out of love with competing at the game which has brought him so much success. "I love this game, I really do," Barrios posted on Twitter. "However, I just don't have that 'fire' that I used to have for Smash 4. I used to be able to push myself so easily and without effort back in the day . . . but nowadays, I pretty much have to force myself to do it."

His retirement doesn't necessarily preclude him playing more Smash Bros. for his fans. "I anticipate I will want to participate once again in tournaments once the next iteration of Smash Bros. is on the horizon," Barrios said. "I will stream Smash and make Youtube video [sic] and all that fun stuff. It's strictly competing, like in highly stressful tournaments and super competitive rankings that I'm moving away from."

Barrios also has several other plans for himself that don't include playing Smash Bros. "I want to write that book I always dream about," he said in his statement. "I want to learn a third language and allow myself to experience a different world. I want to take care of my body the way it deserves to be treated as I age more moving forward."

Our Take
It's somewhat rare to see a pro go out at the height of their career, as opposed to simply failing to perform after a while or being sidelined due to an injury. Hopefully ZeRo is able to succeed at the challenges he's set forth for himself.

Simpsons Meme Uses Video Games To Make Cool Videos

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 20:39

I'll admit, the Steamed Hams meme was something I kind of rolled my eyes at. The scene itself, a Principal Skinner vignette from the season seven episode "22 Short Films About Springfield." is hilarious enough as it is. As someone whose sense of humor is almost entirely derived from obsessive rewatches of The Simpsons, trying to make something funnier out of what was already greatness bothered me.

Then I realized that this meme, centered around remixing the classic scene, was more about using it as a canvas for different ideas. Well, actually, I saw a video game-related one and was really impressed at how well it was done, and that got me looking for all the game-related ones I can find.

If you're unfamiliar with the initial scene, it was a short story in an episode showcasing the non-Simpson characters of Springfield. Principal Skinner, ever eager for Superintendent Chalmers, finally manages to get his boss to come over for dinner. Unfortunately, Principal Skinner's roast has burned and, thinking quickly, Skinner replaces dinner with hamburgers from Krusty Burger and passes them off as his own.

In this Danganronpa-themed video from WhoaDoctorFreeman, Skinner discovers the body of the burned roast, and argues with Superintendent Chalmers in the same fashion as the game's trial sections. The work that must have gone into this is insane. For me, by far the most brilliant aspect is the flashback sequence to a scene that just happened, a hallmark of Danganronpa's narrative.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

This next one is themed after Metal Gear Solid, created by Adam Davidson. There's so many great touches to this one, from the PlayStation loading sounds and times, to the extended ending and phone call. I think my favorite part is the dialogue playing over stock footage of hamburgers being made.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

This next one is of Nier: Automata by SeshohoCian. I would be fine with just playing the scene with Automata's music in the background on some level, but this video goes above and beyond with an amazing Route B. There's even a fake ending that is almost too accurate to the game.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

This final video by iKiwed is a pitch-perfect Ace Attorney joke, even going as far as having the dialogue box with the correct font match the timing of the voicework. My favorite part of this is that I cannot tell if the typos are intentional or not, because the English localization of Ace Attorney is no stranger to typos.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

As with all memes, as soon as it becomes popular it is doomed, so I imagine even by this point the joke is long-dead. Still, for one brief moment, some people made some really cool stuff that they otherwise might not have, and that's good enough reason to partake.

Devil May Cry Creator Hideki Kamiya Pontificates On Series Future On Twitter

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 18:18

Hideki Kamiya, vice president of Platinum Games and director of games like Resident Evil 2 and Bayonetta, is a prolific tweeter. Many of his 170,000 tweets are replies to every single person who tags him, though, if only to block them. Last night, however, Kamiya got a little speculative about what a sequel to Devil May Cry, a series he first created, could look like.

"I'm just throwing some ideas out there," Kamiya wrote on Twitter, "but I think it's about time DMC got a game design revision. Looking at current global trends and the amazing graphics in recent Capcom games, the next DMC game could do with a full model change, like the new God of War.

Instead of being an anime-style hack 'n' slash, maybe Capcom will turn DMC5 into a realistic, cinematic action game...?"

Kamiya was quickly met with disagreement from his Twitter followers and explained that this is not necessarily what he thinks his former employer Capcom should do. He clarified that he saw it as a possible path for the series, but that there are lots of valid paths for it. Something similar to God of War is just one.

Kamiya has famously never worked on a sequel to one of his own games as a lack of opportunity more than desire. By his own admission, Capcom proceeded to Devil May Cry 2 without his knowledge, he was working on Okami during the development of Viewtiful Joe 2, and was working on Wonderful 101 and then later Scalebound during the development of Bayonetta 2. Seeing the director openly talk about series sequels is, in itself, fairly rare.

Capcom has not announced a new Devil May Cry, though current series head Hideaki Itsuno has been teasing a new project for a number of months. Platinum has announced a collection of both Bayonetta games for the Switch scheduled to release on February 16, as well as a third game in the series with an unknown date.

[Source: Hideki Kamiya Twitter]

Our Take
It is interesting to see Kamiya's thoughts about where the DMC series, and even the genre itself, is going. I wonder if it signals anything about his own games at Platinum and if he's interested in pushing the production envelope more.

Man Accused Of Tragic Swatting Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 17:15

Tyler Barriss, known online as SWAUtistic, has been charged in Kansas for involuntary manslaughter for his part in the murder of Andrew Finch.

As we have reported earlier, Barriss allegedly called in a report of a hostage situation on an address he believed belonged to a Call of Duty player that was arguing with another player. The address actually belonged to 28 year-old Andrew Finch, who was shot by police after answering the door. Barriss did not fight extradition from his home in Los Angeles to Wichita, Kansas, where he has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Barriss was charged with giving false alarm in the case as part of the reasoning to extradite him to Kansas, and has also been charged with interference with law enforcement. Involuntary manslaughter is a level 5 felony in Kansas and carries a minimum of 31 months in prison with a maximum 136 months. His bond is set at $500,000.

The officer who shot Finch is still on paid administrative leave pending investigation.

Barriss is also facing charges in Canada for a separate swatting incident targeting a woman that police say Barriss targeted because of her online persona.

Hyperkin Brings Back The Duke Controller In March

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 15:47

The Duke, the original Xbox controller that launched with the system in 2001, was ginormous. Nostalgia is a fickle thing, however, and a lot of people ended up missing the huge controller, especially people with larger hands. Thankfully, they're in luck, as the Xbox One is getting a new version of the Duke with some key changes by the end of March.

The original Duke lacked shoulder buttons, only having two triggers on the back, so the reformed version includes two small shoulder buttons etched into the top corners of the controller. In place of the plastic "jewel" bearing the Xbox logo on the front is an OLED screen which does nothing but play the Xbox startup movie when pressed.

The controller is coming before the end of March for a price point of $69.99 and is compatible with the Xbox One and PC, according to a tweet by Xbox father Seamus Blackley.

Our Take
Fun note: The original Duke was awarded Game Informer's "Blunder of the Year" in the January 2002 issue.

Entertainment Software Association Condemns Alleged Trump Remarks

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 14:38

The Entertainment Software Association, a lobbying group made up of some of the largest video game publishers in the industry, has issued a statement condemning President Donald Trump's alleged characterization of countries such as Haiti as "s---holes."

The remarks were leaked by attendees of an immigration meeting with lawmakers, as first reported by the Washington Post. Multiple witnesses, including Democratic senator Dick Durbin, have both anonymously and publicly attributed the comments to President Trump, who denies using that specific phrase.

In response, the Entertainment Software Association has condemned Trump's language:

"America's greatness is built on our diversity," said the ESA in a statement released on Twitter. "The president's repulsive comments undermine the fundamental values of who are are as a country. There is no place in our society for this type of backward thinking, and we condemn it in the strongest terms."

Members of the ESA include Nintendo, Konami, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft.

Our Take
After months of backing the Trump administration on tax bills and his legislative agenda, the ESA moved quickly to condemn these remarks. It is important that human value trumps politics and business support; it is encouraging to see the ESA speak against comments like this.

Disney Announces Mobile Shooter Star Wars: Rivals

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 14:28

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a new realtime mobile shooter set in the Star Wars universe titled Star Wars: Rivals.

The new game is a PVP multiplayer arena shooter, a genre in which Star Wars is now well-versed, but this marks its first appearance on mobile devices. Similar to games like Overwatch, you can switch heroes in and out as best fits the situation, but the playable characters have to be unlocked first through progression and drops. The rarer a hero is, the stronger they are, and access to stronger heroes is gated by progression in the Arena Leagues.

Heroes include Poe Dameron, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Finn, and Princess Leia, among others. Each hero has their own special ability to use, such as Vader's force choke.

The game is free to download, but will have purchases up to $99.99. Players who pre-register on the Google Play Store will get exclusive access to Death Trooper support units, while iOS players will get access to Rebel Special Forces for a limited time when the game launches. The title supports cross-platform play.

You can check out a trailer for the game below.

Niantic Announces Pokémon GO Community Day

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 14:03

Niantic, developers and maintainers of Pokémon GO, have announced a monthly Community Day for fans to meet up to catch special event Pokémon.

Announced today on the game blog, Community Day is a call to players to meet up at local parks and landmarks to meet other Pokémon GO players and catch Pokémon that have exclusive moves unavailable to normal catches.

The first of these Pokémon comes on the next Community Day, January 20, and is the small-l legendary Surfing Pikachu. Surfing Pikachu, simply a Pikachu that knows Surf, has been well-known among Pokémon fans for years. Pokémon Yellow had a Pikachu minigame that showed Pikachu on a surfboard, which could then be used to Surf like a Water Pokémon over surfable areas in the game. It was even referenced in the Pokémon cartoon.

During Community Days, players will get increased XP or Stardust, and Lure Modules activated when trying to catch event Pokémon will last for three hours.

Here are the hours for the different regions:

The Asia-Pacific region: January 20, 2018, from 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. JST (GMT +9)
Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India: January 20, 2018, from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. UTC (GMT +0)
The Americas and Greenland: January 20, 2018, from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. PST (GMT -8)

Pokémon GO recently cut off older iOS devices, focusing more on iOS 11. It is also available on Android phones.

Our Take
After the technical issues caused by Pokémon GO Fest, it makes sense to try something similar but massively decentralized.

Game informer - Fri, 01/12/2018 - 12:05

The eternal struggle for supremacy over Destiny 2's side activities continues, and players can earn some new loot in the process.

The new faction rally event starts next Tuesday (Jan 16) on all platforms, and runs for one week. Like the previous events, players will head to the tower and pledge their loyalty to either Future War Cult, New Monarchy, or Dead Orbit by talking to each group's respective leader. After that you'll earn faction tokens from most of Destiny 2's ongoing activities: daily milestones, public events, strikes, raids, etc.

Once you've snagged enough tokens, you can cash them in for faction-specific engrams containing the armor pieces from the previous season. However, this time around you can also earn ornaments for those armor sets, which change the look of them. Here's what those look like.

Future War Cult:

New Monarchy:

Dead Orbit:

You can also buy some new auto rifles once the event is over. Like previous rallies, members of the winning faction can pick up their auto rifle for dirt cheap, while the others will be forced to pay significantly more. Here are the different offerings:

Future War Cult:

New Monarchy:

Dead Orbit:

In addition to the new faction rally, Bungie also announced that a new hotfix going live on Tuesday will remove any Curse of Osiris requirements from Destiny 2's seasonal content, so players who only own the base game will also be able to join the Faction War.
