Sony Announces Monster Hunter And White PlayStation 4 Pros Are Coming West

Tue, 01/16/2018 - 14:16

It's always nice to have options and Sony is providing them with new PlayStation 4 Pros coming to America and Canada. The two new colors, White and a Monster Hunter-themed black with a logo and colored controller, are available in the coming weeks

The white PlayStation 4 Pro was originally included solely in a Destiny 2 bundle, marking the first time a color other than Jet Black was made available for the Pro. Fans who already own Destiny 2 or didn't want to purchase the bundle can now buy the system itself separately for $399.99.

The Monster Hunter bundle features an until-now Japanese-exclusive PlayStation 4 Pro bearing a special Monster Hunter design of a Rathalos, a unique red controller, and Monster Hunter World for $449.99. Officially named The Rathalos Edition, the console will be available on January 26 in very limited quantities, the same day as the game itself.

Both consoles are exclusive to Gamestop and come equipped with 1TB harddrives.

Final Fantasy Dissidia Spin-Off Opera Omina Coming West

Tue, 01/16/2018 - 13:21

Another entry into the Square-Enix contest of title mouthfuls, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omina is coming out in English for Final Fantasy fans to enjoy on Android and iOS.

Originally released in January in Japan, the free-to-play mobile title functioned as a companion piece to the then-arcade Dissidia title now coming to PlayStation 4. Opera Omina functions more like a traditional Final Fantasy game than the PS4 fighter and even has a few more characters than the main Dissidia game.

Opera Omina was created as a rest world for heroes between their recurrent battles in Dissidia, but it too eventually starts crumbling. The heroes are tasked with finding enough light to help restore the world with graphics that resemble the PlayStation 1-era Final Fantasy games. You can also join together both heroes and villains, so putting Kefka and Sephiroth with Aerith is perfectly reasonable, if not super weird for her.

The game is coming "soon" but will be released on both Android and iOS. You can check out the trailer for the game below.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is releasing on PlayStation 4 on January 26.

Night In The Woods Arriving On Switch January 18 (Update: February 1)

Tue, 01/16/2018 - 12:29

UPDATE: The developers have confirmed that the listing is real, but the date is incorrect. Night in the Woods will be launching on February 1, not January 18.

The original story is as follows:

Night in the Woods, the coming-of-age adventure-platformer by developers Infinite Fall, is coming to the Switch on January 18.

The news comes from a listing on the eShop which both confirmed the port and the release date, things that were not explicitly known until today. In October of last year, when other console ports fort he game were announced, it was strongly suggested by the game's Twitter account that a Switch version was on the way, but nothing had been said since.

The listing also confirms that the game will sell for the standard price of $19.99 and will take up 6.2GB on your Switch.

You can read our review of Night in the Woods here and check out a trailer for the game below.

Rumor: Latest South Park Title Coming To Nintendo Switch

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 20:50

According to a retailer listing, Ubisoft's newest South Park title, The Fractured But Hole, might be coming to the Nintendo Switch fairly soon.

The listing comes from Australian retailer Sanity, which put up mention of the game in their "Coming Soon" section with a March 13 release date. The date is a Tuesday, but there's a two-in-seven chance for dates to fall on traditional game release days, so it does not necessarily confirm anything.

Retail listings as a whole tend not to confirm anything, but Ubisoft has a history of ports and remasters leaking early. South Park: The Fractured But Whole, unlike the previous game, runs on Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine, which was ported to the Switch with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, so there should not be a ton of work getting the game to run.

You can find our review of South Park: The Fractured But Whole here. If the listing and date are accurate, we should probably find out fairly soon. Though, if it is real, it is odd that the game was not in the latest Nintendo Direct. South Park: The Fractured But Whole was released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in October 2017.

More Bloodborne Cut Content Shown In Video

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 20:29

Bloodborne's cut content is a treasure trove of interesting material. While a model viewer got us close to a lot of these NPCs and enemies, Youtuber Lance McDonald has actually placed a lot of the content in-world and is able to fight or otherwise interact with the missing models.

The video shows off cut content that may have been removed for time reasons or changes in the story. Interestingly, a few of the things shown off in this video appear to be from the Bloodborne DLC, or things brought up in the DLC were planned for the main game. There's also a nearly complete King of Skeletons and a previously seen Lesser Demon, suggesting either the game was used as a testbed for Dark Souls 3 development or that the game may have taken a hard left turn lore-wise at some point.

You can catch the video below. What do you think about the cut content? Does it have any interesting implications for you about where Bloodborne might have gone?

Our Take
The Slug Princess is fascinating, because of how much she resembled the Kos worshipers but is still clearly a little different and designed. I wonder if at some point she was meant to be more of a Gwynevere kind of NPC, where killing her changed up the locale and made the worshipers attack you. I also think the living doll is really interesting because of how it relates to Gehrman's doll.

Freedom Planet Developers Tease Possible Switch Support

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 18:29

GalaxyTrail, developers of the indie Sonic-influenced Freedom Planet, are teasing support for the sequel on the developer's Facebook page.

Freedom Planet is a 2D sidescroller with more than a little Sonic mentality, with the first game seeing success and critical favor when it released on PC and console, including the Wii U. After the sequel, Freedom Planet 2, was announced, fans have spent the last year asking GalaxyTrail to bring the game to Switch, as well. After the pictured tease, the developer explained it was just a fun joke.

"We're currently exploring all of our options to offer you the game and the sequel on the Switch," the Facebook account wrote. "The best we could give you so far was a silly pun, though. On the subject, there is nothing to announce at this time, but we'll definitely let everyone known as soon as there is."

You can see a trailer for Freedom Planet 2 below, which is scheduled to release on PC at a date to be determined. Sonic Mania developer Christian Whitehead has announced he will be contributing to the game.

Our Take
I feel like the developers would not start teasing until or unless they were pretty sure the series was coming to Switch. Hopefully they have something to announce soon.

Watch This Speedrunner Play Two Punch-Out Games At Once Using One Controller

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 17:05

Awesome Games Done Quick 2018 set new records for charitable donations, but this run of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out might be the most memorable thing that happened over the weekend.

In this run, which was a donation incentive to encourage people to give more in order to see it, speedrunner Zallard1 used a specially-modified controller that sends inputs to the SNES and NES at the same time. Basically, whenever he presses a button on the controller, both Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out receive it as if there's nothing weird about it.

Zallard1 then proceeds to speedrun both games simultaneously, occasionally needing to pause in one game to super-punch in the other, but rarely keeping focus on just one title. It's a hell of an interesting thing to watch. You can find the video below and check out Zallard1's twitch channel here.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Coming In 2020

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 15:48

Marvel is on the cusp of ending this major phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the first half of Avengers: Infinity War coming this May and the second part in 2019. Until now, no movie past Infinity War has been scheduled aside from the next Spider-Man film, but James Gunn has confirmed that 2020 will be the year for the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

The news comes from director James Gunn's twitter, which replied to a fan question about when the third movie would be arriving. Gunn replied "Coming in 2020."

Gunn confirmed he would be directing the third Marvel movie about space-faring heroes last April. A little while later in a Facebook Q&A, Gunn hinted that the third movie might incorporate Nova into the story. "Nova comes up occasionally as someone we might use," Gunn said. "We're going to be setting up new characters. It's going to really expand the cosmic universe [and] will be the last movie of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy."

The Guardians are also in Avengers: Infinity Wars, which you find the trailer for below.

Sega Bringing Back House Of The Dead For Japanese Arcades

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 14:48

Sega has announced a new House of the Dead game more in line with the previous games in the series than the 2009 Wii title Overkill.

The new game, simply titled House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn, is set to be released in Club Sega, the publisher's own arcade in Tokyo with a whole whopping single cabinet. It is, however, two player and features some gimmicks like an air cannon and moving seats within the cabinet. That makes it sound too expensive to end up in any smaller arcades.

House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn next week at Club Sega, so if you're nearby, you can try it out. There is no word on whether the game might ever come to consoles, but here's hoping.

Our Take
I ended up really liking Overkill, but it's nice to have a return to a less Grindhouse of the dead. Hopefully Sega brings this to consoles or, at the very least, has a stripped down cabinet for smaller arcades in the west.

Netflix Doesn't Appear To Be Coming To Nintendo Switch Anytime Soon

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 11:21

Last year, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that the company was in talks with streaming-video providers including Netflix and Hulu about getting their apps on the Nintendo Switch. Hulu made its way over to the console in November, but Netflix is still nowhere in sight. If a recent tweet from a Netflix customer service agent is any indication, that situation isn't about to change anytime soon.

This Twitter exchange just about says it all:

@Netflixhelps @netflix is there any word on when Netflix may be launching on the Nintendo Switch? The demand is high! We are eagerly awaiting its launch!

— Nintendo Screens (@NintendoScreenz) January 13, 2018

Hey there! There are currently no plans for Netflix on Nintendo Switch. We appreciate your feedback on it! *JF

— Netflix CS (@Netflixhelps) January 14, 2018

[Source: Twitter via US Gamer]

Our Take
While it's certainly possible that the agent in command of Netflix's Twitter account isn't privy to top-secret conversations behind the scenes, we'll have to take it at face value at this point. It's certainly possible that the companies have plans for a bigger reveal at some undisclosed time, but let's be real here: It's Netflix, a service that's available on just about everything else that has a screen. It would be nice to have it on Switch, too, but we're not exactly lacking for alternatives.

Fortnite Continues Its Steep And Steady Growth

Mon, 01/15/2018 - 11:08

Epic Games' Fortnite continues to pick up players – PCGamesN.com reports that the game has added another 10 million players, bringing its total to around 40 million.

Furthermore, the game's peak concurrent users has hit as high as two million. This exceeds the 1.3 million mark hit in December.

In other Fortnite news, recently Epic outlined its first update for the year.

[Source: PCGamesN.com]

Our Take
The game's rise thanks to its Battle Royale mode is exceptional, and I'm curious how its concurrent-numbers mark stacks up to any benchmarks separating phenomenons from the truly world class.

Reader Discussion – If You Could Change One Thing About Your Favorite Game, What Would It Be?

Sun, 01/14/2018 - 19:48

I love Mass Effect 2, but it's far from flawless. Our favorite games are dear to us, but there's always room for improvement. If you could change one thing about your favorite game, what would it be?

If Mass Effect 2 could be remade with the third entry's combat, I'd probably love it even more. How about you? Is there a game that you love, but there's one thing that could make it better? This could include visuals, gameplay, story – anything.

Report: Quantic Dream And David Cage Face Allegations Of Toxic Studio Culture

Sun, 01/14/2018 - 13:52

Quantic Dream, the studio behind cinematic adventure games like Heavy Rain and the upcoming Detroit: Become Human, is accused of having a toxic work environment that involves sexual misconduct, as well as sexist, racist, and homophobic comments aimed at its staff.

Reports came from three separate French outlets today: Le Monde, Canard PC, and Mediapart, all of which corroborate these claims. According to Le Monde, five former employees filed a complaint in spring 2017 when an employee was circulating degrading images involving other staff members. In February 2017, an IT manager discovered 600 photoshopped images that depicted employees in homophobic, sexist, or offensive ways, including Nazi symbols or crude imagery. These files date back to 2013, with some even being displayed in open spaces around the office.

Studio heads David Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumièr strongly deny the allegations, with Cage reportedly saying that he is "shocked" by them. Although they were both aware of the photoshopped images, they say they didn't know of the more offensive ones.

Le Monde reports that allegations also include sexual misconduct at parties, such as Fondaumièr forcing kisses on women or having generally sleazy behavior. Long work hours and racism were also among the complaints. For example, two sources told the French paper that after watching a surveillance video of a burglary at the company, Cage asked a Tunisian employee if one of the robbers was his cousin. Cage has since responded to these claims, calling them "absurd."

Cage gave a statement in response to the allegations of homophobia and racism, which you can read below:

You want to talk about homophobia? I work with Ellen Page, who fights for LGBT rights. You want to talk about racism? I work with Jesse Williams, who fights for civil rights in the USA... Judge me by my work.

Employee accounts describe Cage as hard to work with and that there is a high turnover rate at the 180-person company.

Last year, Quantic Dream faced controversy for its trailer for Detroit: Become Human, due to its depiction of both domestic and child abuse.

[Source: EuroGamer via Le Monde]

Our Take
These allegations are saddening to hear about, since no work environment should ever be toxic or take aim at its workers. I honestly find Cage's response disappointing and embarrassing. Pointing to his projects and saying he's worked alongside activists for LGBT rights or civil rights is unrelated, and doesn't mean anything when it comes to his supposed actions. I wonder if the allegations would at all impact the release of Detroit: Become Human. Should we hear more, we'll update this article.
