Destiny 2 Outlines 2018 Updates, Which Add 6v6 Playlists And Eververse Items As Activity Rewards

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 18:49

In a lengthy and wide-reaching blog post, Bungie today detailed a number of ways their shared world shooter is changing to address community feedback and improve the long-term play experience.

Destiny 2 has had a tumultuous couple of months. Despite a strong launch back in September, the first expansion in early December was met with a mix of negative and lukewarm responses by many, and issues connected to the endgame experience have siphoned away both players and popular streamers to other games. Today, Bungie took recent criticisms in stride, and presented an array of announcements about how Destiny 2 is aiming to change in the coming days, weeks, and months.

The updates included in the blog post are spread out across four major updates, one coming on January 30, on in February, and the other two coming in Spring and Fall.

One of the biggest changes is to the Eververse, which is being heavily reworked in favor of making other activities more rewarding by offering ghosts, ships, and sparrows at their end. Mods are also being reworked, and Bungie promises these changes will "focus on reducing redundant mods, more unique theming [sic], and greatly increasing their impact on your power."

Other additions include Masterwork Armor, the extra bonus of which reduces damage taken during super moves, new strike scoring, ranked Crucible play, and the ability to equip multiple emotes at once.

Raids are now more rewarding as well, with raid-specific mods, as well as economy changes that mean raid weapons drop after each major encounter, and that raid gear can be directly purchased with tokens.

For a full breakdown of what players can expect throughout the year and when, make sure to read the entire blog post.

Our Take
After a holiday break during which Destiny 2 players heard little communication from Bungie, the wealth of info in this new blog post offers a lot to ponder. Whether you agree with all the proposed changes or not, I think most dedicated players will appreciate some clear communication from the developer about how the game is changing.

Nintendo Sues Mobile Developer Colopl Over Patent Infringement

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 18:47

The rarely litigious Nintendo have filed suit against Japanese mobile developer Colopl over a 2006 patent for using a touchscreen as a virtual joystick.

Colopol, which developed a game called White Cat Project, apparently ran afoul of Nintendo with their DS-era patent on freefloating touchsreen approximations of a joystick. The immediately obvious example of this control method from Nintendo is Super Mario 64 DS which used the touchscreen to replace the N64 original's analog stick with the DS wrist strap.

Nintendo originally filed these complaints against Colopl in 2016, but after Colopl denied the copyright infringement, Nintendo decided to file suit. Nintendo are seeking 39.3 million yen in damages, or roughly $350,000.

Monster Hunter Community Creates Adoption Program For New Players

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 17:33

Monster Hunter can be difficult to wrap your head around and, while you don't necessarily need a guide, most players agree that having a Monster Hunter teacher makes for a better experience. As such, the Monster Hunter community has created an "Adopt-a-Hunter" program where veterans can team with new players to help ease them into the game.

The initiative, which is born of the Monster Hunter reddit and Discord communities, is essentially a big brother program for Monster Hunter World. While World, from the beta, seems like the best tutorializing Monster Hunter has ever had, there are a lot of subtleties to Monster Hunter that are best taught from someone who knows the ropes.

Prospective hunters can join by going to the Adopt-A-Hunter Discord, which has forms to sort membership and information bots. The onboarding bot is even written in-character as a Guild receptionist.

Monster Hunter World is releasing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 26, with a PC version coming in late 2018. A final PlayStation 4-exclusive beta runs from January 18 to January 22. You can check out the latest trailer for the game below.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

Our Take
I think this is a great idea, especially with how robust the online is in this version of the game. I bounced off Monster Hunter more than once before a friend helped me learn the game while we played it on 3DS in a Starbucks every week. I'd say anyone who is hesitant should at least look into getting tutelage.

Fox Shakes Up Dates For Superhero Movies, Moving Up Deadpool 2

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 15:37

Fox is changing up dates for Deadpool 2, Gambit, and The New Mutants, moving Deadpool 2 up in the process to May 19, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The new date moves the Deadpool sequel just ahead of Disney and Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is currently targeting a May 25 release. It is only a two week bump, but Deadpool two weeks earlier is always good news, and is likely to get out of the way of Solo's second week.

Similarly, Gambit is being moved from Valentine's Day 2019 all the way to June 7 of the same year. The movie stars Channing Tatum, but recently lost director Gore Verbinski, so the delay makes sense.

Finally, The New Mutants, a horror genre take on the X-Men universe, gets the biggest delay. The movie has been pushed back ten months from April 13, 2018 to February 22, 2019.

Xbox One Version Of PUBG Reaches Three Million Players

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 15:25

Despite a rocky launch on Xbox's Game Preview program, PUBG's phenomenon status has carried over to the console, where it has surpassed over three million players.

The popularity of the game puts even more of an onus on developer PUBG Corp. to improve the game, and Xbox General Manager of Game Marketing Aaron Greenberg states in the blog post announcing the three million number that the team wants to do just that. "

You’ll continue to see regular updates roll out for PUBG on Xbox One such as this week’s addition of first-person support for solo, duo, and squads gameplay and the team is just getting started, with more updates planned that include additional game optimization and the new Miramar map," Greenberg says.

The three million number is no doubt a great milestone, but is still no match for the PC version, which has hit an all-time high of 3 million concurrent players and nearly 28 million copies sold.

[Source: Xbox Wire]

Our Take
Even with major competitors like Fortnite on console, PUBG continues to steamroll sales records. I'm curious about whether the PC and console versions begin diverting at some point. Does auto-aim get introduced to accommodate the relatively imprecise shooting on console? Either way, this bodes well for PUBG's future in 2018.

Space Invaders Extreme, Groove Coaster Heading To Steam

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 14:32

Taito has finally made the Steam-related announcement it was previously teasing: Space Invaders Extreme is coming to Steam next month, and Groove Coaster will soon follow.

Space Invaders Extreme, which hits Steam in February, is a Pac-Man Championship Edition-style remake of the classic game, quickening the pace of the game and wrapping in a warm neon exterior.

Groove Coaster, on the other hand, is a rhythm game only tangentially related to the series which first released on mobile phones. The game had players tapping, sliding, or holding down their thumb to match the notes, and also featured hidden notes players to could find once they knew the song well enough. Groove Coaster hits Steam this Spring.

[Source: Official Taito Website]

Our Take
Both of these games are great experiments people don't talk about enough. Groove Coaster in particular might be my favorite mobile phone game. I'm not sure how Groove Coaster will fit on PC, but Extreme is a great fit for any platform that can use a controller (so yes, pretty much all of them). I'm a little surprised these games weren't also announced for Switch, honestly.

First Trailer For Netflix's Altered Carbon Series Wears Blade Runner Inspirations On Its Sleeve

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 14:29

The first trailer for the Netflix-funded adaptation of Richard Morgan's 2002 Sci-Fi novel Altered Carbon brings a colorful darkness to the screen.

In the future, technology allows for people to upload their consciousness and download it into new bodies, similar to Ghost in the Shell. This setup allows for a gritty noir detective story of solving the murder of the world's wealthiest man.

You can check out the trailer below. Altered Carbon is scheduled to show up on Netflix February 2, starring James Purefoy, Joel Kinnaman, and Will Yun Lee.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Headed To PC Next Month

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 13:15

Final Fantasy XII last year received a fantastic remaster in The Zodiac Age, but it was only available to console users. That changes next month, when the game launches on PC.

The PC version features all of the enhancements from the console versions, but also adds a few PC-exclusive bells and whistles. PC players will be able to run the game at 60fps, access the game's New Game Plus and Minus modes before beating the game, choose among three different soundtrack options for the game, and max out their License Points nad Gil from the config screen.

Square Enix promises to show off the PC version of Zodiac Age during a stream on its Youtube channel on February 2.

Our Take
I was half-tempted to pick up The Zodiac Age when it released on consoles, but these extra PC makes me extra tempted. I fell off of it the first time, however, so I'm not completely sold in revisiting it.

Splatoon 2 Opens Doors Of Shellendorf Museum Map Tomorrow

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 13:09

The third of the four Splatoon 2 maps Nintendo teased last November is releasing tomorrow.

The museum-themed map, Shellendorf Institute, has two levels with a glass ceiling/floor in the middle to get the drop on other players. Also, there appears to be some kind of whale-dragon skeleton hanging at the top, which raises troubling questions about Splatoon world lore.

Shellendorf Institute will go live tomorrow. The final map teased, Arrowana Mall, is a port from the first game and will complete the content Nintendo teased with the 2.0 update.

Assassin's Creed Rogue Is Getting The Remaster Treatment This March

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 12:21

Assassin's Creed Rogue perhaps didn't get the appreciation it deserved (it was releaed the same year as Assassin's Creed Unity, and on previous-gen consoles), but maybe that will change this March, when the seafaring title heads to modern consoles this March.

The announcement trailer is quick and to the point: Shay Patrick Cormac is an assassin turned traitor, and is on a mission to hunt down his former allies. The remaster will launch on PS4 and Xbox One March 20.

Sakura Will Be Freely Playable In Street Fighter V Next Week

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 11:40

Along with Capcom's revamping of Street Fighter V with Arcade Edition next week comes a new character: Sakura. To get players acclimated to the new features and foster a little good will, Capcom is letting players try her out free of charge during Arcade Edition's launch week.

From January 16 to 23, anyone who downloads the free Arcade Edition update will be able to use to character across all modes. Players will be able to earn fight money (SFV's in-game currency) using her, though it will all disappear once the free period is over unless players choose to purchase her with fight money or by buying the Season 3 character pass.

[Source: PlayStation Blog]

Our Take
This is a pretty cool way to start off a year of what I'm guessing is going to be a nostalgic year from Capcom. Between the Arcade Edition of SFV and the upcoming 30th Anniversary Collection, Street Fighter fans have a lot to look forward to.

Dark Souls Trilogy Box Set Coming To PS4 In Japan

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 10:32

With the recent news that Dark Souls is getting a current-gen remaster, all three Dark Souls games will soon be playable on Xbox One and PS4. Time for a box set!

Bandai Namco has announced a pricey box set exclusive to PS4. The set includes all three Dark Souls games, all of their DLC, the soundtracks for each game, a pair of bookends, 10 art prints with a frame, and three physical dictionaries with the descriptions of every item in the series.

The set will retail in Japan for 49,800 yen and has not been announced for the West. We've reached out to Bandai Namco about a Western release and will update this story should they reply.

[Source: Dark Souls Official Japanese Site]

Our Take
That price is way too much (about $450 in US dollars), but those dictionaries are pretty tempting, since item descriptions are where Dark Souls keeps most of its important lore.

Folk Singer Sting Acts As The Narrator In Indie Game Where The Water Tastes Like Wine

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 10:00

The year is starting off with a strange bang, as folk singer Sting is announced to play the narrator in the upcoming indie title from Dim Bulb Games.

It is unknown if Sting will be an omniscient narrator that knows every step you take, but he is definitely a wolf, who you don't want to stand too close to. We also don't know the quality of Sting's performance, so he might not yet want to give up his daytime job. Hopefully there's no sci-fi plot twist where he's an alien, even a legal alien.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is scheduled for early 2018 on PC and Mac, with other platforms to be announced. The studio was founded by Johnnemann Nordhagen, co-founder of Fullbright and sole programmer on Gone Home. The game will be available on Steam, but has already passed Steam Redlight, err, Greenlight.

You can check out the character & cast trailer for the game below.

Dark Souls: Remastered will be available on May 25.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Arrives On Switch With Funky Kong In Tow
Dark Souls: Remastered Announced For Switch, Coming This Year

We'll be sure to add more screenshots and details on these games as we get them! What did you like or not like about today's Direct?

Our Take
All in all, this probably isn't the Direct fans were expecting after last year's Switch reveal and grand software showcase. It looks like Nintendo is taking the first half of the year a little slow with focus on ports and third party support to fill in the gaps, but a lot of these look like great games that many people missed. Hopefully more of Wii U's hidden gems, like Tokyo Mirage Sessions, also get a second chance on Switch. Also, portable Dark Souls is hard to turn down.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Arrives On Switch With Funky Kong In Tow

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 08:13

The Wii U platformer Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is coming to the Switch with Funky Kong as a new playable character.

The port was announced during this morning's Nintendo Direct and includes Funky Kong, Donkey Kong's friend and possibly brother. Funky has a host of new abilities that pretty much combine all the other Kongs' abilities into one character, including double-jumping, hovering, and infinitely rolling. Funky looks like a speedrunner's best friend.

Tropical Freeze has been long suspected as a likely candidate for a Switch port, as the game featured almost no Wii U tablet use at all. You can read our review of the Wii U version here. The game will release on the Switch on May 4.

Indie Games Fe And Celeste Arriving On Switch Very Soon

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 08:12

Previously announced indie games Fe and Celeste have been scheduled to hit Nintendo's most recent platform for a while, but we've yet to receive solid dates for those two titles.

Fe, which was announced at E3 2016, comes from Electronic Arts as a part of its indie initiative EA Originals. In Fe, you control a fox-like creature in a forest that reacts to the songs sung by creatures that dwell within it. On the Switch version, you can use the Joy-Con motion controls to affect the pitch of the song. Fe also utilizes HD rumble with the Joy-Cons.

Celeste is a difficult 2D sidescroller that features over 300 levels to master. The title comes from the minds behind TowerFall and Skytorn.

Celeste hits Switch on January 25, while Fe launches on February 16.

Mai, Kula, Yuri, And More Return In SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy

Thu, 01/11/2018 - 08:09

It may not be a new King of Fighters game, but SNK games have something to look forward to.

Mai, Kula, Yuri, Leona, and Athena are all back in SNK Heroes: Tag Team Frenzy, a fighting game that changes up a few things about the standard fighting formula. Though the action in the Nintendo Direct trailer looked awfully similar to The King of Fighters XIV, Tag Team Frenzy has new moves called Dream Finishes, which seem to be the only way to actually defeat an opponent after most of their health has been depleted.

Players can also customize characters with new outfits and items. No exact release date was given, though it is scheduled to hit this Summer
