Our Top 10 Most-Viewed Videos for 2016 – More Star Wars, More Frozen, and more horror!

Fri, 12/30/2016 - 10:00

As we approach the new year, it’s time to take a look back at the most popular videos we shared throughout 2016.

Last year, many of our most viewed videos featured something “Star Wars” or something “Frozen” – and this year is no different. But only half of the list features characters from either of this popular properties, leaving plenty of other uniquely fun entertainment to be found in the other five.

We had more than 185 million views across all our videos in 2016 and the top 10 below represent the new ones that grabbed everyone’s attention the most.

Onward with the list…

10. Kylo Ren invades Jedi Training at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

“The Force Awakens” was hugely popular in 2016, especially as everyone’s new favorite bad guy Kylo Ren took to the stage at Walt Disney World.

9. NEW Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens stage show at Walt Disney World

Coming in right behind the 10th most viewed video is even more Kylo Ren, this time joined by Captain Phasma and the First Order as they command attention at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

8. “Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular” full final performance at Disney California Adventure

Moving from one fan favorite to another, the long-running “Aladdin” musical stage show ended at the Disneyland Resort and its final performance caught a lot of attention.

7. Best Cosplay of San Diego Comic-Con 2016 – Marvel, DC, Disney, Girls & More

Always popular on this list of most viewed videos is our annual round-up of the best cosplay at San Diego Comic-Con and this year’s lineup was pretty stellar.

6. NEW Captain Phasma Stormtrooper March at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Back to Walt Disney World, our final “Star Wars” video joins this list as Captain Phasma made her first theme park appearance.

5. FULL POV Tron Lightcycle Power Run ride at Shanghai Disneyland

This year brought us the addition of an all-new Disney theme park: Shanghai Disneyland. And fans were most excited about finally getting a ride based on “TRON.”

4. “Frozen – Live at the Hyperion” FULL first public performance at Disney California Adventure

Even more popular than the “Aladdin” musical ending was the introduction of the new “Frozen” musical in its place.

3. NEW “Frozen Ever After” full ride POV at Epcot Norway, Walt Disney World

And even more popular than the “Frozen” stage show was the new “Frozen” ride that debuted at Epcot this year.

2. Princess Elena of Avalor Royal Induction Ceremony at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World

Not even the popularity of “Star Wars” or “Frozen” could take over the excitement surrounding a new Disney Princess being inducted at Walt Disney World!

1. FULL RIDE POV: “Skull Island: Reign of Kong” at Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure

But the top honors this year go to Universal Orlando as the highly-anticipated new “King Kong” ride made its debut, wowing guests with a massive new animatronic figure of the big ape himself.

As we move into 2017, if we had to make a prediction as to what the most popular video of the new year might be, it’s probably safe to bet on the opening of “Pandora: The World of Avatar” at Walt Disney World. But water park videos are always huge on YouTube and it’ll be a fight for that top spot as Universal Orlando opens Volcano Bay around the same time. Of course, there will surely be many more surprises, so be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch all our latest videos!

Honorable Mentions:

We have to include two horror-ific videos that didn’t quite crack the top 10 most viewed, but were quite popular nonetheless.

11. FULL Walking Dead attraction low light walkthrough 2016 at Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood debuted a year-round walkthrough attraction based on the hit TV series “The Walking Dead” and its grand opening was quite the frightful sight.

12. American Horror Story haunted house at Halloween Horror Nights 2016, Universal Orlando

At Universal Orlando, the “American Horror Story” haunted house at Halloween Horror Nights was almost unanimously the most popular with its stellar sets and crazy characters.

Happy New Year!

VIDEO: Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con (Comikaze) returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center with cool cosplay

Mon, 10/31/2016 - 12:24

Since November of 2011, Stan Lee’s Comikaze has been held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in the fall of each year. Despite its beginning as one of the smaller, more intimate contemporary pop culture conventions, it has steadily grown to become a popular event among Southern California locals and visiting tourists.

This year, Comikaze’s organizers (along its founder and namesake) chose to rename the event Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con, in order to better represent its home city and provide a more recognizable trademark with which to draw in larger crowds. This was my first time attending the convention, but from what I can tell it seems to be working.

WATCH CONVENTION FLOOR VIDEO:

WATCH OPENING NIGHT COSPLAY VIDEO:

Stan Lee’s L.A. Comic Con was held from Friday, October 28th through Sunday, October 30th this year, and despite competing with many nearby Halloween festivities, the event was well-attended and a good time was had by all. Be sure to visit L.A. Comic Con’s official website for more information and to keep an eye out for next year’s dates and tickets.

Fans, vendors gather to show support for cancelled Spooky Empire convention

Tue, 10/11/2016 - 11:01

Spooky Empire is arguably the largest horror themed convention in the Southeast, producing shows in Central Florida twice a year. Drawing fans from all over the globe to celebrate the genre with celebrity guests, diverse vendors and epic parties, hordes of fans look forward to the weekend event every fall and spring.

Unfortunately a monster more frightening than any celebrated at this horror convention brought down its wrath on Central Florida last week, forcing the show’s first ever cancellation.  Slated to make its debut at the Orange County Convention Center for its largest event to date, promoters were forced to pull the plug when Hurricane Matthew forced flight cancellations (preventing celebrity guests from attending) and brought about the closing of the county-run event facility.

While fans were dismayed, no one was more disappointed than the show’s producers Petey and Gina Mongelli. In what can only be described as a gut wrenching decision, their hand was forced to shut down the magnificent show they had planned for this year at virtually the last minute.

October 6, 2016 –
This is probably the hardest announcement we’ve ever had to make in the history of Spooky Empire, but due to Hurricane Matthew we are being forced to cancel this weekend. We cannot put our attendees, guests, staff, and everyone involved in harms way. We tried our hardest to keep this open even for part of the weekend but it looks like Matthew wins.

Most flights coming in have been cancelled; meaning most of our guests can’t get here. Many of them tried very hard and rebooked their flights many times. The cast of Stranger Things were still on for Saturday and Sunday, but the chance of their flights getting cancelled as well was inevitable.

No one is more devastated about this then we are. We put so much work and heart into this weekend. For those of you that don’t know us, we are just a mom and pop business, this is not a large corporation. Every part of this event is touched by one of us personally. Our very loyal staff and volunteers have worked their butts off for almost a year on this weekend.

We were ready for one of our largest shows ever, and we hope that this cancellation does not effect us for future events.

Please give us some time to gather our thoughts here and make some decisions. We know you’re all going to want immediate answers, but we are unable to to provide them right now. You have our word, that we will do our best to do the right thing for everyone in this situation.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding.

– Petey and Gina

Here’s where it gets really interesting. You see, Spooky Empire is not like most other conventions. Not only is this show run by hardworking fans of the genre – truly a “mom & pop” operation, the microcosm that is Spooky Empire is best compared to family. Each show is more like a reunion than a themed event with staff, vendors and attendees forging lifelong friendships.

This year, in the face of disaster, something magical happened. Family came together to take care of family. Almost as soon as the storm passed, calls went out to rally and regroup for the weekend.  Longtime vendor Nick S. (Coffee Shop of Horrors) called the owner of local mega-comic shop Gods and Monsters and permission was given to use the venue. Next, he contacted show producers for their blessing on what he had in mind and green-light was given. The result: Saturday and Sunday became Spooky Empire Refugees: Save our Spooky.

Save our Spooky, you ask? A little insight, the convention is produced by REAL people (not a big corporation) who have to spend real money (much of which was already spent in promotion, décor, programs, t-shirts, etc), and also the vendors who bring the amazingly unique items to the convention floor depend on sales AT the event to stay afloat (on top of production costs, there’s table fees, lodging and food they have to cover). Because of all of this, the closing of the convention center for the weekend obviously had a HUGE impact on everyone involved.

Magic soon happened. In less than 24 hours vendors, performers, and even a few celebrity guests came together for a completely fan-run event to support one another. Vendors were able to show and sell their art and wares, and fans had a place to gather. Over and over again it was heard WE are a family, we look out for each other. Kane “Jason Vorhees” Hodder dropped in on Sunday to sign autographs and pose for photographs. Fans themselves even donated priceless items from their own collection; vendors gave various items and art as well – all for the daily auction held to help offset the losses incurred by the show producers (over $1000 raised in auction – aka, a good start).

As many were, and still are concerned about the future of Spooky Empire,a GoFundMe page was set up to gather donations to help offset the losses incurred.

“If you care…Share!!! Donate please, and as I and we all know there are many people in need from the Hurricane and a silly Horror con is low on the list. But Pete and Gina Mongelli lost their livelihood and much more due to the storm … But if everyone just gave 1 to 5 dollars, then months from now when you need that break from who the hell knows what is coming next in this country and life…You made a deposit on keeping your sanity. Besides many people are way out of pocket and this could help get it all back. A dollar from 100,000 people is not really all that hard to do with the interwebs. So spend a buck and you can always get a free cup of coffee from Coffee Shop of Horrors. Try THAT at Starbucks! A buck will get you the cup and nothing more. Lol! Thanks and hope everyone you know or love is safe from this beast of a storm” – Mitch H. (event auctioneer and author of Bubba the Redneck Werewolf).

Show co-producer, Denna E. further suggested additional ways concerned fans could help, “Buy from the Spooky Empire store. T-shirts, posters, merch and be in the look-out for auction items. The link is on the website and show merch is being loaded once inventory has been done. Once tickets for the April show go on sale, buy a ticket or two. The ticket sales money is what goes into creating the show. Marketing, expenses, set up etc. Buy a program ad in the April show program”

Oh, and there is a sign of hope. Dates for next year’s shows have been posted on the Spooky Empire website: April 21-23 2017 (Wyndham Orlando Resort) and October 27-29,  2017 (Hyatt Regency Orlando).

SDCC 2016: Voice actress Tara Strong cosplayed as Harley Quinn — and it was perfect

Mon, 07/25/2016 - 09:58

While I’m sure I’m going to adore Margot Robbie’s portrayal of DC Batman universe icon Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, Tara Strong will always be my Harley. She has voiced many iterations of the character, including Harley in the the Batman Arkham video game series.

But it’s understandable — Robbie looks physically more like the character than Strong, right? NOPE! Get a load of her insanely fan-pleasing cosplay for San Diego Comic-Con:

She’s perfect. Need more?

Ok, too far away. Time for another close-up:

And here’s Strong causing some trouble during dinner — “HIYA, PUDDIN’!”

If you’re a fan of this lady like I’m a fan of this lady, you would have sold your firstborn to be a fly on the wall at the convention, watching Tara Strong live as Harley Quinn for even the most brief of moments. So cool. Now if we could just get Mark Hamill to walk around dressed as the joker, I would lose my damn mind.

For all things fun and awesome, stick with ITM!

Case workers dress as Disney Princesses in court to support girl’s adoption hearing

Thu, 06/16/2016 - 14:39

After a week of so many tragic news it’s always great to see heartwarming stories like these, especially when they have an added Disney touch.

Lucky little girl Danielle Koning from Grand Rapids, Michigan had an important court date to show up for last week. It would be the final court hearing for her foster parents, Sarah and Jim Koning,  to adopt Danielle and another little girl. Courtrooms are never a fun place, especially for a 5-year-old, so to make the day extra special for Danielle, her foster care workers came up with the idea to dress everybody as characters from Disney Princess movies.

Imagine Danielle’s surprise when she walked into the courtroom to see it full of Disney Princesses — even the judge got involved!

Executive director for Samaritas Foster Care Program, Laura Mitchell, told ABC News: “It’s obviously a very meaningful day. The hearing is definitely a celebration that the kids now have forever families. And it shows the love and compassion that our case workers have.”

PHOTOS: MegaCon 2016 – Fan Groups and Amazing Displays

Tue, 06/07/2016 - 15:06

One of the most enjoyable parts of MegaCon (at least in the opinion of this writer) are the fan clubs and group displays. The talent and devotion to both amazing displays representing a myriad of various fandoms and the encouraging dedication to helping others (as most are non-profit, charity driven organizations).

In most cases a display or gathering of spot-on props and vehicles from any of the given groups is set up as a photo op with proceeds partially (or fully) going to a particular charity. Other groups are set up to draw membership (engaging in other charity work outside of the convention).

MegaCon 2016 did not disappoint – complete with returning giant Star Wars sets and creatures…

The Walking Dead encounter…

Ghostbusters…

Vehicles (and characters) from Back to the Future

The 1960’s Batman series.

An ever growing Steampunk presence (featuring custom-made vehicles from Victorian Steam Works out of North Jacksonville).

. . .and one more note about MegaCon (and most other fan shows): You never know what you are going to find (and should keep an eye out for random acts of kindness):

Enjoy the full album of encounters here:

PHOTOS: MegaCon 2016 – Super shopping with mega-diversity

Mon, 06/06/2016 - 10:36

Perhaps the biggest single area of MegaCon is its massive vendor floor.  At this temporary shopping mecca, fans of all sorts can peruse wide aisles (10 of them) looking for the collectible or token that fits their fan fancy.  Just about anything science fiction, fantasy, anime or comic can be found as vendors from across the globe gather to sell their wares.

Fully represented were all labels of comic books from rare to current and matching action figures and props to match.

Fan-based art work, posters and photos could also be found on just about any aisle (and especially in the artist alley).

T-shirts of every genre and mashups of multiple fandoms found their festooned fronts displayed proudly for purchase.

Costumes, weapons and accessories of all styles called out for fans’ wallets.

Jewelry and personal accessories of every style and size dazzled delighted shoppers with representations of their favorite genres.

Niche markets like Japanese anime and steam-punk were also present for purchase.

Some vendors even brought in celebrities and models to draw fans to their booths…

…while others relied on mirth and parody.

Shoppers had 4 days of opportunity to find the perfect souvenir or collectible to add to their prized possessions, the matching wig or patch for their costumes or amazing art to decorate the walls of their homes.  The full photo gallery below shows a good portion, but not all, of the purchase possibilities that the MegaCon 2016 vendor room had to offer:

PHOTOS: Versus – Battle of the Fandoms, THE unofficial MegaCon after party

Thu, 06/02/2016 - 14:34

Moshi-Moshi Productions, known for their over the top and extremely popular convention parties, once again struck gold with their Versus – Battle of the Fandoms party held Saturday May 28th.  Under the umbrella of classic video game style match-ups, the 7-hour, 21 & up party transformed Club 39 and the adjacent pool area of the Rosen Plaza hotel into a mega-mecca of pop-culture characters as MegaCon 2016 drew huge crowds to the area.

The event, which drew hundreds of costumed guests, packed the night club and spilled out into the pool deck – which was had its own DJ and a giant tent for the event sponsors to show off.  Themed munchies and adult beverages fueled heroes and villains as they partied the night away.

No Moshi-Moshi party is complete without exciting and eclectic entertainment exploding throughout the event. From club mixes by DJ Elliot, mermaids in the (heated) pool to exotic acts on stage in the night club, and even a surprise engagement – the night was filled with delicious distractions.

Wed, 06/01/2016 - 10:26

The talent and devotion to superheroes, fantasy icons, science fiction figures and much more exploded across the massive Orange County Convention Center as thousands attended the pop-culture event, many in elaborate and imaginative outfits.

Gathered here for your perusal, is yet another installment of cosplay imagery.  The images do not fully represent the energy and excitement that charged the show floor as fans made their way about the weekend’s festivities.  Nor do these photos accurately display the countless hours of assembly and craftwork poured into these amazing creations.  Suffice to say that we were quite impressed with what we witnessed and think you will be too (full gallery at bottom of the page) . . .

VIDEO: Check out the absolute BEST cosplayers of MegaCon 2016!

Sun, 05/29/2016 - 10:54

You guys — MegaCon was insane this year!

Between the entire show being under new management, the plethora of celebrities invited to the convention this year, and more organization than ever, this was easily the most well put together MegaCon I’ve ever attended. The parking situation is still horrendous, but you can’t deny that the payoff is worth it!

But as everybody knows, some of the best reasons to attend this convention are the cosplayers…and boy did they bring it this year! I spent about 14 hours on my feet hunting down the best and most clever cosplayers for this year’s convention, and all of that culminated in a whopping 11 minute video showcasing 2016’s best and brightest rockstar costumers.

Without further ado, check it out:

Crazy, right? Did you or your friends make the cut? What was your favorite cosplay in the video? Let me know what you think in the comments below, and if you want to give yourself a shout out, have at it: you deserve credit for your hard work!

I’d really like to thank all of the talented folks who let me stop them for a quick video. You all rock, and congratulations on a successful MegaCon!

MegaCon 2016 is coming . . . and it’s bigger than ever!

Mon, 05/09/2016 - 15:33

This year marks the first year that MegaCon’s new owners are driving the huge pop culture convention. Adding an extra day and moving it to Memorial Day weekend seemed like a shot across the bow of other Orlando conventions usually operating that same weekend, but that hasn’t stopped the new owners from lining up an all-star event.

With headline guests like William Shatner, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei to celebrate Star Trek’s 50th anniversary, alongside big names like Stan Lee, Kevin Smith, John Cusack, John Barrowman, Christopher Lloyd, Hayley Atwell, Ralph Macchio, Jason Mewes, Michelle Gomez AND reunions for fan favorites like Harry Potter (Jason Isaacs, Tom Felton, James & Oliver Phelps), Batman (Adam West AND Burt Ward, making one of their final convention tour appearances), Star Wars (Anthony Daniels, Jeremy Bulloch and Daniel Logan) and Walking Dead (Jon Bernthal, Tom Payne and Lennie James) AND comic book legends like Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, Peter David — the celebrity line-up reads like a who’s who in fantasy, horror and science fiction.

The 2016 show is sure to surpass the 80,000+ fans that were in attendance from last year. Note that this is only a partial list to the massive line-up of Science Fiction, Comic, Horror, Anime, Animation, Gaming, and Cosplay guests – see the full list here. Along with the impressive roll call there are several organizations displaying their crafts (think a T.A.R.D.I.S. or T.I.E. Fighter or Steam-punk Airship) that offer unique photo opportunities.

In anticipation of an amazingly busy and fun filled weekend, ITM takes a peek back at MegaCon 2015 and shares a few lessons learned (along with a few choice photographs from last year’s event).

There are few things we learned racing from panel to panel and everything in-between.

First – arrive early, before the doors open, before the parking lot gets busy.  When it took 45+ minutes to get from the Beachline (one of the main highways traversing Central Florida) exit for the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) to the actual OCCC parking lot, we made that mistake only once – the following days we arrived between 7am and 8am (doors to the show open at 10am Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

Stay hydrated and take time to eat.  Bring snacks and water and make sure to leave time in the scurry from event to event to eat – your body will appreciate this extra attention fueling up.  There are food vendors at the convention center where you can expect to find a decent meal but at a cost – both time (usually long lines) and to your wallet (prices tend to be higher than similar venues outside the OCCC campus).

Bathe – please.  While the Orange County Convention Center is the 2nd largest in the country – you will be among thousands of fellow fans – at times in thick, crowded hallways and standing room only auditoriums.  Add that to the abundance of heavy/hot costumes and the need to remember to use soap and deodorant becomes more than obvious.

Plan – Download/review the event schedule (available May 16th) and plan your day.  Leave time to line up for popular events and arrive early.  Be prepared to choose between closely scheduled events in order to have time to queue up for the one of your choice.  Allow time to navigate crowded halls and even more crowded vendor area (especially on Satuday). NOTE – The John Barrowman QA is something that MUST be seen (one of thee most entertaining QA sessions at any convention).

Bring a camera – in addition to the club and organization displays, thousands of amazing costumed fans find their way to the convention halls to display their cosplay creations.  If going in costume, keep an eye out for planned themed photo meet-ups (like Disney characters, Marvel or DC heroes/villains, Harry Potter, Star Wars and more)

Be patient and have FUN – a little patience for a badge check or lengthy queue goes a long way to ensuring a fun weekend.

Take a look at the after-hours events too – there are parties, raves, comedy shows and more that go on after the ‘normal’ convention hours that limit the vendor and autograph areas.  Moshi’s after party is always a popular event but again, be prepared for a well-attended party with a bit of a line to get in the door).

PHOTOS: Star Wars and dachshund rescue pups are a winning combination

Tue, 04/26/2016 - 10:23

You may have heard about the famous Star Wars cosplayer group the 501st Legion before but did you know that the Dark Side fans also do some awesome charity work? The villains from the Star Wars universe teamed up with the Diamond Dachschund Rescue of Texas for a photo shoot to bring awareness to rescue adoptions. And if seeing Darth Vader with a cute puppy don’t make you want to adopt a dog of your own, you may have truly joined the Dark Side!

In the meantime, enjoy Princess Bell/Leia and Chewbacca-beast!

The height on that Wookie! Crazy. Do you have any favorite mashup cosplays? Post them in the comments below!
